So I have a D16 Deer tag and an upland stamp. What a great idea to go for all 3 if you can.
Shotgun + Birdshot + Slugs + Turkey loads = ready for anything.
Sadly all the places that I THOUGHT would have water, didnt. All those places are now swamped with people hunting deer like CRAZY.
I went to another spot that I have had some turkey success at and find nothing but quail. No turkey sign at all. There used to be flocks of 20 at this spot. Sucks!!!!!!! WHERE'D they go? Probably to the local golf courses like the rest of their friends.
I gave up trying to find deer or turkey. So I just loaded up some bird shot and went on a 12 mile hike. I only got 3 birds. Thank God for my dog, Dane, who found all 3 in heavy brush. Without him I would've got skunked. I showed up to the hunting grounds too late in the day when it got hot and the birds disappeared. I got all of my shooting in at 9am-10am. After that, NADA. I think if I would've arrived at 7am, I would've shot more birds. So many would'vs - should'ves - could'ves.
This area I hunted is usually lush with life and water/streams/creeks. Everything was BONE dry. I have to do some hunting more north where there is a little more water and greenery like the eastern sierras. Well at least there were no other hunters there because it is so difficult to get there to begin with.
