Scent control???

So I am dialing in all aspects of deer hunting without getting to caught up in everything online and advertisements. Most importantly I've been scouting with my new pair of vortexs. Great pair of binos and so far just seeing a few small does. Great to get out. One thing I have been trying to get a grasp on from someone's personal experience and not a sales man is scent control. What's a good de scent spray? And washing your camo in baking soda, etc... Any feedback on this topic would be great.

Yes and no. should you practice good scent control Yes!!! Does it matter No. If you are bow hunting and have critter down wind at ground level it will smell you. Can good scent control give you that 1/10th of a second you need? Maybe. Can wearing scent free boots in and out of a stand help? Maybe.

As far as scent control, I've tried most brands when bow hunting.....I think these scent eliminating products are BS.....When they get down wind....They smell ya......Play the wind, you'll be alright............2 cents

Agreed playing the wind is most important. I like to wash my clothes in Baking Soda. no soap due to the phosphorous content . from my reading it makes one glow like a Christmas tree to ultraviolet vision.(Deer) I try to take precautions not to contaminate my hunting clothes and it has worked well for me. I have had deer yards away and not pick up my scent. so mainly play the wind, and take precautions as noted above. when hunting from high on the mountain top has always worked for me. mainly well concealed. my torso well hidden and my outline concealed. and playing the wind. in my past I hunted with flannel shirts and jackets. and jeans, my success rate then was 80%. every year.

Always work the wind. I fart wayyyyy to often. No scent control will help me there.

You can wash and spray on your clothes whatever you want, but a lot of people forget that the coffee they drank that morning makes their morning breath smell like dog shit.

Very nice. Ill try not to eat Mexican food before the hunt. So just straight baking soda. How much? A cup? And maybe pack my camo away in a Ziploc when not using? Thanks for the replies. Can't wait to head out next week for a scouting.

I use about 1/8 to 1/4 of a 16 oz box (1lb) of baking soda.

I find that I am sweating a by the time I get to my spot. So unless I get dressed when I get there the scent control is pointless. I do wash my clothes with scent control but the wind is what I really worry about. Start hunting coyotes it is a great way to learn the wind.

I'm hoping Oct won't be too hot. I will indeed do the baking soda wash. I've got a pretty good understanding about wind and stalking. Where I want to hunt is horrible terrain which I'm hoping means less hunters and more deer. Thanks again for the advice.

I still dont think it matters. Deer have a sense of smell stronger than that of a dog.

I highly doubt the smell of you sweating makes any difference to the deer. They still smell you.

But confidence goes a long way too. So if it makes sense to you, go for it.

No worries Nick. What ever works for every one. Native Americans would go to the sweat lodge night beforehand. Cleanout out body. Then not eat any meat. And done this for thoasands of years. Paparing for the hunt.

I found that Dr Bronners soap has a baby formula or unscented that does a really great job of removing smell, and if it's worth it to you, shower with it rather than anything with perfumes. You can probably also wash your clothes with it, shave, brush teeth, etc. You can find it at health food stores in a light blue bottle. I bought it for my kid and now use it since I hate perfume smells.

I wash the clothes in a scent eliminator (who knows effectiveness) but keep them all in my "dirt box" which is a huge tupperware container. I add pine twigs and mt. sage from the areas I hunt. Always shower soap/shampoo-free as close to the hunt as possible. I also have an ozone generator I run in my truck the night before the hunt. I do alright.
These are just added precautions added to 30+ years of hunting experience. Can't hurt. In the end skillz pay the billz. Good luck
