I managed to do some last minute scouting last night with a buddy who has been hunting turkeys here for the last 5 years. We got to our spot about 3 pm and walked and glassed until sunset. We managed to find one big bird poop and a nice track in a stream bed. That seemed promising, but just as we got back to the car it started raining. I pulled up the forecast and it said 90% chance of rain all night and all day sat (today). Hmm. We had planned to meet at 5:30 am, but the rain gave us pause. We weighed whether to cancel altogether, but decided to just meet later.
So this morning, 7 am at the Park & Ride we met, coffee in hand. Arrived at the spot at 7:45 expecting to see a zoo and a disney-style parking lot. Instead, no one there! What luck. Between the weather, the deer season, and maybe the pheasant opener, everyone else was busy. Sky was fairly clear but there was a brisk wind. We moved in slowly. Stopping and glassing often. We walked about 4.5 miles. Found a breast feather pretty early but spent the rest of the day looking at trees, rocks, and grass. Bummer, no birds. Got back to the car 10:15 and it started to hail right after I put my gun away. Another piece of good luck. Great being out there, fall is so awesome.
