    Jacumba Hikers Attacked by Cartel

Crazy stuff and doesn’t at all surprise me. Yet another reason to carry a side arm in addition to a rifle/shotgun when hunting. Jacumba has always been one of the sketchiest places for my solo outings and always tried to go with a buddy there. Gear up folks...

What’s your favorite hunt gear item(s)? Share your cool/useful items.

What’s your favorite hunt gear item(s)? Share your cool/useful items. A few for me (outside of OnX that is essential for public land), and in no particular order. KUIU gaiters – I don’t wear every outing but a pair is always in my gear box. They sure do help a lot with moister, snow, and...

    Love hunting in the snow

Buddy and I had a great outing today. As we were approaching a new area that I’ve been meaning to poke around for quail the last couple of years, we ran into a tight group of 25 pheasants. Nice surprise but didn’t get a shot. Then off to see if this spot was holding quail. Being able to see...

Went to a long(ish) range today – a little humor

Buddy and I went to one of our nearby ranges today just after lunch to stretch the legs on a couple of our rifles. This is DIY on public land close to home that only goes out to 1,000 yrds but has some nice targets. Before leaving, we grabbed a .223 for some more fun. I quickly dumped a 20 round...

Input on Sig Cross bolt action folding stock models

Looking for input and insight (good or bad) on anyone that owns or has owned one of their versions in this Sig Cross series. Only version I’m not considering is the PRS model due to barrel length and overall weight. As background, I have all the required rifles and calibers I need for hunting...

Red Tail Fox on the Hunt

We get a fair amount of wildlife that comes through our property. Couple of days ago, this red tail fox came in to successfully hunt a vole (mouse like rodent that burrows in the snow in the winter). We’ve only got 6-12” of snow left so now easy hunting for the fox. While the coyotes mimic this...

Woman recovering after being mauled by cougar

Yet another recurring reason to always carry heat. I always pack my 10mm in my chest holster out hunting, hiking, fishing, mtn biking, etc. Never know when a you’ll have to defend yourself from a bear, lion, wolf, cow moose w/calves…or tweaker. Woman recovering after being mauled by cougar...

    1/1/24 report

Went out with a buddy this morning on a 2 hr “hike” with the hopes of getting a good start for 2024. Bumped a nice covey of quail but not able to get a shot off. Didn’t have a dog with us this time so more challenging. Good weather. Happy New Year everyone.

Any geese at Lake Henshaw this afternoon?

Lots of Canadian Geese (~ 100) fairly close to the lake mid-day feeding. For anyone that hunted Henshaw today, did you see or bag any? Good luck…need some wind.

    Lake Henshaw 12/17

I looked at Henshaw after quail hunting this morning. There were a lot of ducks on the lake with some wind and a lot of ducks flying around. Quite a few wigeons. Good luck to those hitting it tomorrow…you might have some success. Would have included a picture but just to grainy with my phone.

    Chukar Outing

Got into 4 nice coveys today. I went 0 for 3 and buddy went 1 for 3. I really despise the little bastards! The outing kicked my ass. Good luck to the others chasing them this season.

Last Weekend of the Quail Season

Nice to get out this morning for a couple of hours after the last storm. Birds were much less vocal than I expected. Managed to miss two and get two. Took a buddy out that hadn’t been all year and he had a blast. Was a gorgeous day out today in the backcountry. Lots of quail this season...

    ID Quail/Chukar Opener Report

Was back in Idaho for again for a little R&R, hiking, trout fishing, upland, etc. Went to an upland spot outside Boise with a friend that lives there. Hit a nice public land spot with a natural spring early. Loads of quail and chukar tracks but couldn’t seem to find them without a dog during...

    What’s in your freezer?

With the hunt season winding down, thought it would be interesting to see what wild game (harvested by YOU, not purchased or given to) others have in their freezer. Below is in our 2 freezers currently and the spot prawns definitely in our top 3 as a favorite. Quail, dove, pheasant, duck...

    Dec 11 Upland Report

Went out today with a buddy. Weather was sunny with cool temps in the morning and probably low 60s by late morning. We had several missed shots between the two of us on VQ but managed to harvest a couple. Didn’t see any dove today.

    Quail and dove

Took dad out this morning in San Diego county. Conditions were great with light cloud cover. Dad was very happy, shot well, and harvested a couple of varieties. More quail out there than I've seen in many years.
