    Alaska Black Bear Hunt

I bought the Helley Hansen bibs and top in 2012. I definitely recommend them. This was the first set of rain gear I've owned that didn't leak. I beat some brush while wearing the bibs on a wet day this past deer season, and shredded the finish off the legs, so I'll have to reseal or replace them...

    "Budget" build

Thanks, guys. NBK, ya know how you spend money on a project, and you think the total is one amount, but in reality it's way out of the ballpark? Turns out that I was more than a bit off in what I told you on Saturday. Here's a breakdown of what some of the items cost: Bartlein barrel $371...

You're welcome, and welcome to the hunting community. Sorry for the delayed response. Congratulations on completing hunter safety. Get your license, and go hunt!

    "Budget" build

Results at last! But before I get to the good stuff, a few notes on the build. I painted the rifle with KG Gunkote (not the aerosol version from Brownell's, but the liquid straight from the manufacturer). They have a bake-on finish and an air-cure finish. I bought the bake-on product for those...

    "Budget" build

I'm getting close now! All that remains to be done is: Finish up the paint on the stock Clean out the action screw holes in the stock (quick drill job) Mount the scope and boresight it Clean the barrel I might adjust the trigger and see if I can get rid of the creep If I can get all of that...

    Where to hunt? Orange County...

I think some of you guys should take it easy on Almasy. Perhaps if he had started with his background and pics, or rephrased his questions, the outcome would have been different, but I feel bad about the reception he received here. Almasy, it looks like you are serious about hunting, so you...

    Drone scouting

My first thought is that the DFW might have something to say about it. I know they have rules about scouting from an aircraft within 48 hours of hunting deer or big game or something like that. So I don't know if they would extend that to drones. My second thought is that it would be pretty...

    "Budget" build

Barrel, action, and bolt are now painted. This took a while because I needed to get some practice runs in on some AR lowers and other pieces before I unleashed the airbrush on my new baby! The bolt is reassembled. I blasted the finish off of the stock, because it had some unsightly wear and...

Barrel break in - Yes or No

It was probably zeroed at the bullet diameter, so that no math is necessary to see the final group size.

Hunting guides Ca, Az, Nm, Or ?

You will need to do your homework, but if you're a meat hunter, you can't beat a whitetail doe/fawn tag in North-Central WY for about $40. Mostly private land, though, so you might need to knock on some doors. They also have doe/fawn pronghorn tags for the same price, in zones a little further...

    Mearns' Quail

Sorry for the long delay in updating this thread. What can I say, I got lazy! Here's a modified version of an article that I wrote for the San Diego Sporting Dog Club's newsletter. After Christmas, I had the opportunity to join a friend on a hunt for Mearns' quail in Southeastern Arizona. I had...

    My Turkey Trips This Spring

Ran into a couple guys this morning getting ready to head out into the Laguna rec area with shotguns. Good thing it was me that stopped to chat and not Mr. Green Jeans. I do my best to educate those I encounter, but let's face it. You need to know the laws better than those enforcing them...

    "Budget" build

The barrel and blasting work were done by Randall Rausch at AR15barrels.com (also 700barrels.com). NBK asked who is shooting his rifles. As it turns out, he has done a lot of work for a lot of the folks at the California Precision Rifle Club (www.caprc.com). He's located in Van Nuys (traffic...

Barnes Copper Bullet FAILURE - Copper Super Fail!

Nice! What if this particular round didn't get a full charge of powder? Maybe muzzle velocity was only 2000 or something like that...

Barnes Copper Bullet FAILURE - Copper Super Fail!

I'm sorry if I step on any toes, but if Barnes told you that the bullet pictured, after having been fired out of a 300 Wby mag at that range, did what it was designed to do, then their design is wrong. That certainly doesn't resemble the expansion they advertise. If they said this one was a...
