PSA: Don't forget your tags and pens!

Last year we had a heartbreaking story on this forum. A first time hunter (name withheld to protect the innocent) had his first kill: a beautiful and massive 4x4 that he had caught on camera before the season. He forget his pen so he fixed the unsigned tag and dragged the beast out. Mr Green...

    That "New Guy" Needing tips

Welcome to the site. As sprig mentioned, the popular choices for deer rifles are .270 and .30-06. The former is the thinking man's deer rifle and the latter is a brute force instrument. I shoot a .270, but I have often pondered a .243. For our SoCal deer I think it's plenty of gun, and will give...

    Kill buck last day!!

Nice work getting it done. Just fyi for next time, put the tag on before doing anything else and leave it on. Last year a guy on this forum lost a magnificent 4x4 for transporting it without a tag.

    Hello to everyone

Welcome Chris. You should take that 870 and search out some bunnies; maybe 2nd season dove. Those are tasty victuals and a good way to get your feet wet.

Penasquitos Canyon, like most state and city parks, is closed to hunting. If you're just starting out, read this thread. And welcome to the forum. http://southerncaliforniahunting.com/huntersforum/index.php/topic,6764.0.html

Hunting Report & Physical Fit Importance

Now that you mention it Lee, I think I do have chlorine tablets in there too. No doubt a distress beacon would be a game changer in a true catastrophe. Worth thinking about.

Hunting Report & Physical Fit Importance

I was thinking round about 40 or below. Let me know if you need a hiking buddy.

Hunting Report & Physical Fit Importance

One of my favorite things about hunting is that it's inspired me to take my fitness to a higher level. I was in OK shape the last 2 years, but I've been training hard since the end of last season. Getting my butt kicked on a couple of long hikes in January lit a fire. I like the idea of the...

Hunting Report & Physical Fit Importance

You need a young apprentice. Find a strong young noob who will benefit from your experience and drag you out of the brush when you get in trouble.

    How do you prepare dove

I cut the breast off the bone, brown it in oil, then braise them in 1/2 stock, 1/2 beer or wine for about 2 hours. Then shred and mix into a second pot of black beans, sauteed onions and garlic, and crushed tomatoes. Dove black bean chili! I still have a dozen euro breasts in the freezer from...

    El Nino

What if it doesn't stop raining for days or even weeks. It has happened before. Will you hunt in a downpour? Will that kind of weather impede deer activity?

    El Nino

Is anyone thinking/worrying about El Nino? 'They' are predicting a hugely wet year; how will that affect our so cal seasons (say, I don't know, D16)?
