    Hunting is hard (D16)

Thanks Luke. I know it's not easy out here. But frustrating to never even see them. Though as you mention, I have seen does on the roadsides at night, and on private land all day. When you start glassing, where do you point your eyes?

    Hunting is hard (D16)

I didn't make it out for the opener. But sunday I hiked up to my "promising spot" with Bonjour. I had been to this saddle point only twice, both in the drizzle, and found fresh poop and beds, as well as expansive views. We were in place sunday morning by 5 am, 1.5 hrs before shooting light. As I...

    Binoculars

FWIW, I bought this adapter for half the price. They are all roughly the same design, and I think the 1/4-20 screw is standard on most binos.

    Scouting - tracks and beds

Sorry if this is long...looking for advice. Two weeks ago I was scouting in the heavy drizzle/light rain. I found a decent buck print that appeared only hours old near a saddle of a ridge. That seemed promising so I went back last sunday (also in light drizzle) and glassed the saddle from grey...

    All sound reasons. Thanks Steve.

    Binoculars

I just started using a tripod for binos and it's a game changer. It's like you get another factor of 2-3 in magnification.

Steve what's wrong with hammered (not that I'm disagreeing)?

    Binoculars

Conventional wisdom is 10x or 8x. Any more magnification results in image blurring from hand motion. I can't comment on either of those models. I use Nikon Monarch 5s, which are pretty good for the price point.

    Youth shotgun

How old is your youth and how much do you want to spend? I think a common choice for kids is a single shot 20 gauge; many of my friends grew up shooting those. They are light guns (so easy to carry), cheap, and sized for kids. But because they're light, they kick relatively hard. My same...

Awesome experience with F&W fisheries biologists. Fish count, Diamond Valley Lake!

Cool! I've always wanted to do that. Electrofishing? How did you get the inside scoop?

    Venison Cookbook (kickstarter)

I've mentioned Hank Shaw on here a few times; one of my favorite hunting/fishing food writers. He has a kickstarter out for a new venison cook book. He's including tips on handling/processing and recipes from around the world. I own his first two books and they are great, I'm pre-ordering this...
