2016 SCH New Mexico Elk hunt (in the field report)

"Strong" work. Surgical strike, by the sound of it.

Using a trap rig for big rock fish

When I fish over rocks with a weight on bottom, I get hung up. I know some guys use lighter line on that bottom section, or otherwise contrive a 'weak link' there, so the weight can break off easily and you can get the rest of the rig back. I would think the thinner (torpedo) weight would help...

    Arizona hunting lic.

I'm going to Flagstaff next weekend to help a friend and his son with their cow elk tags. I'm stoked to see some animals. He told me, "Bring a shotgun, if we finish early we can hunt quail." LOLZ. That's after I worked my ass off in D16 for nada.

    Arizona hunting lic.

Last year I had to fill out a paper form and mail it in. This year I was able to renew online.

    woman shotgun instructor

Re: woman shot gun instructor Two things: 1) Punctuation kills! Shotgun is a single word, your title suggest that an instructor was shot... 2) I am far from expert but I find shotgunning to be a little bit of black magic. The more I think about it, the more I miss. Intuitive aim really does...

Lion following you. What would you do????

I would soil myself. Immediately and thoroughly. No one wants to eat food covered in crap.

    Hunting is hard (D16)

I hunted dark to dark Thurs and Friday. Saw does and does with fawns. Saturday hit a new spot in the AM. FINALLY saw my first bucks in the field. A small bodied deer with a somewhat wide 2x or 3x, and a mature looking bruiser (too dark to see the rack). Both were 800+ yards away, across a...

    Hunting is hard (D16)

Indeed Steve. Hunters were out in force today. The does I'm seeing are singles, except one today had 2 fawns. Does that imply zero rut activity in my areas?

    Hunting is hard (D16)

Good advice. Hunted dark to dark today. Could have filled 2 doe tags. Still not seeing any bucks. A guy walked into the draw below my hill. Waved at me through the binos and walked a full circle around the hill over the next 2 hours. Thanks bro, public land hunting at its best.

    Hunting is hard (D16)

Update: I hunted 6 of the first 9 days of the season. Took off yesterday and today to make some $$$. I have been sitting up high glassing huge valleys, washes, and adjacent hills. Mostly at sunrise, but also a few sunsets. Since opening sunday (saw two bucks fighting at 2 miles) I've seen lots...

    Hunting is hard (D16)

Went back out today. Hiked in a few miles to a canyon I've never visited. I was hoping to glass the draws as the sun went down. But when I got in there it was impenetrable over-head brush. Impossible to see anything, so I had a nice hike. Still hunted some meadows on my way out. I'm thinking of...
