Deer are way more used to hunting/shooting/hikers than you think. Just stay in the spot and if they are around they will come by.

At some point I am gonna have to pick up a shotgun this year. Still hasn't happened the mammal tags keep going. Something about killing deer that keeps the shotgun in the safe.
